The numbers look healthy. They are also the product of a Merkle Tree construction that proves only inclusion, not solvency.

Every major exchange rushed to publish a Merkle Tree report after the FTX failure. That was understandable. The collapse of FTX exposed a black box of commingled funds, undisclosed loans, and an internal accounting system that operated more like a narrative than a ledger. The industry responded with a technology that can prove that a specific user balance sits inside a summarized root hash. That is not nothing. But it is not enough.

I have spent my career watching centralized exchanges treat disclosure as a substitute for independent verification. In this case, the disclosure itself is routine. It is not a new proof system. It is not a zero-knowledge protocol. It is a monthly refresh of a database snapshot. The interesting question is not whether Huobi HTX is solvent on one specific date in September. The interesting question is whether the technology and governance around this snapshot genuinely protect users from the failure modes that killed FTX.

Mathematics respects no community, only consensus. The consensus here has become dangerously comfortable with the phrase proof of reserves. The ledger doesn't lie, but the narrative does.

Context: What Huobi HTX Actually Disclosed

Huobi HTX is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange with historical roots in the Chinese market, a global operating footprint, and a strategic relationship with the TRON ecosystem. The proof-of-reserves disclosure covers eight classes of assets: BTC, ETH, TRX, USDs, HTX, XRP, DOGE, and SOL. The user-facing part of the mechanism works like this. A user logs into the platform, requests a Merkle Tree proof, and receives a cryptographic path that allows them to verify that their own account balance is included in the tree. The exchange also publishes a list of wallet addresses that allegedly contain the corresponding assets. That is the entire technical contribution. The mechanism does not prove that the sum of all user liabilities in the internal database exactly matches the sum of all leaves in the Merkle Tree. This is not a novel observation. Auditors have made the same critique of centralized exchange proof-of-reserves reports across the board. The novelty, if any, is that Huobi HTX appears comfortable presenting this limited technical artifact as a source of risk confidence even while refusing to publish the full verification tooling, independent witness signatures, or the precise methodology used to construct the liability side of the tree.

The snapshot date is also critical. A reserve ratio above 100% on September 1 does not mean that the exchange could withstand a bank-run-style withdrawal wave on September 10. The crypto market does not respect calendar dates. A concentrated drawdown in the value of the reserve assets, coupled with a synchronized wave of user withdrawals, could exhaust a thin surplus within hours. The 101% to 109% range reported by Huobi HTX signals a tight balance sheet, not a fortress.

The exchange describes the report as a transparency enhancement. That description is accurate only if transparency is defined as showing users a number. The complete picture of a centralized exchange balance sheet includes pending withdrawals, cold wallet access controls, custodial segregation, insurance arrangements, counterparty risk, and the legal status of the entity holding the assets. None of those items can be derived from a Merkle root.

Opacity is the original sin of valuation. Huobi HTX has been in operation long enough to understand that the market rewards clear, auditable, and repeatable disclosure. What remains absent is the harder kind of disclosure: independent verification of the database against the tree, a signed third-party audit of the exchange's liabilities, and a regulatory framework that makes false or misleading reserve reporting a legal offense.

Until those layers exist, every proof-of-reserves publication remains a selfie rather than a physical examination.

Core Analysis: A Second-Phase Deep Dive Into the Reserve Ratios

Let us separate the report into two distinct claims. The first claim is that the assets exist somewhere in addresses that Huobi HTX controls. The second claim is that those assets are unencumbered and available to satisfy all users who demand withdrawal.

The first claim can be partially tested on-chain. If Huobi HTX publishes a BTC address, an observer can check the address balance at the moment of the snapshot. That is useful. If the address contains 104 BTC for every 100 BTC of liabilities attributed to BTC users, the asset side is substantiated on that date.

The second claim is much weaker. An observer cannot know whether those address balances are funded by customer deposits, by the exchange's own working capital, by borrowed coins from a lending desk, or by temporary transfers from another address owned by the same controller. The observer also cannot know whether the liabilities in the database include all of the exchange's obligations or only the subset of user balances that the exchange chose to load into the tree.

The phrase reserve ratio therefore needs to be redefined in plain language. In the Huobi HTX context, it is a ratio of selected on-chain assets at one block height to selected internal ledger liabilities at one internal data snapshot. It does not measure aggregate financial health. It does not measure leverage. It does not measure counterparty exposure. It is a periodic photograph of a small frame inside a much larger and darker balance sheet.

That framing is not intended to single out Huobi HTX. Every centralized exchange that publishes a proof-of-reserves report without independent audit is subject to the same critique. But Huobi HTX is a particularly interesting case because of the composition of its reserve basket.

The presence of TRX at 109% is significant. TRX is not a neutral external asset when the exchange has deep commercial and governance ties to the TRON ecosystem. The same crypto networks that produce TRX also produce USDs, an algorithmic stablecoin style asset that was listed by Huobi HTX as another reserve component. When an exchange lists native ecosystem tokens and ecosystem stablecoins as proof of solvency, the market should ask whether those instruments can hold their value during a crisis of confidence in that same ecosystem.

Consider the mechanics of a hypothetical stress scenario. If users lose confidence in Huobi HTX and simultaneously attempt to redeem their balances, the exchange would need to liquidate or transfer assets from its reserve wallets. A large proportion of those wallets appear to contain TRX and USDs. If the market for TRX is deep, the exchange can convert TRX into BTC or USD without significant price impact. This is the reflexivity problem that proof-of-reserves reports cannot solve. A reserve asset that is economically correlated with the exchange's own survival is not equivalent to Bitcoin held in cold storage. It carries the same issuer or ecosystem risk that the proof-of-reserves framework is supposed to mitigate.

The same critique applies to HTX token itself at 103%. Including a platform's own token in its reserve ratio is a fragile gesture. At the moment of insolvency, a platform token will typically collapse first because its value is directly tied to the perceived health of the platform. A 103% reserve ratio computed with an illiquid internal token creates a false sense of protection. In extreme conditions, that 103% can become far less than 100% within a single trading session.

I am not saying that Huobi HTX is insolvent. The data required to prove insolvency is not available in the public disclosure. The point is narrower: the composition of the reserve basket matters more than the reported percentage. A 109% ratio in BTC is emotionally and financially different from a 109% ratio in an ecosystem asset with a thinner order book and a higher correlation to the exchange itself.

The same can be said of USDs. The stablecoin appears in the reserve asset list, but the announcement does not explain the mechanics of USDs issuance, its collateral structure, its redemption rights, or whether the exchange holds enough external liquidity to honor the stablecoin's nominal value during times of stress. A stablecoin that is not fully backed by cash or high-quality collateral is a risk multiplier, not a risk reducer.

Let me be direct: I do not have independent evidence that USDs is unbacked. The correct term for this part of my analysis is N/A - insufficient information. But the absence of disclosed issuance mechanics in a proof-of-reserves document is itself information. It tells us that the exchange is asking users to trust a number without supplying the underlying instrument contract. The ledger might be correct. The narrative is incomplete.

The Short History of Proof-of-Reserves Technology

To understand why Huobi HTX's proof-of-reserves report is a market standard rather than a market leader, it helps to remember why Merkle Trees entered the exchange accountability conversation in the first place.

There was no standardized accounting treatment, so the exchange could exclude loans and derivative positions. There was no legal obligation, so an inaccurate proof-of-reserves report would carry few consequences.

A more advanced solution would combine Merkle Tree inclusion proofs with zero-knowledge proofs of total liability equality. An exchange would prove, in a cryptographically verifiable manner, that the sum of all user liabilities in its internal database is exactly equal to the sum of all leaf values in the Merkle Tree. That would close the liability manipulation gap. It would not close the asset side gap entirely, because the exchange could still move assets in and out of the wallets around the snapshot, but combined with frequent updates and third-party verification it would be a substantial improvement.

Huobi HTX has not adopted that class of solution in this disclosure. It has disclosed a standard Merkle Tree snapshot and a set of wallet addresses. Its technical positioning is therefore not innovative. It is maintenance mode. The exchange has simply continued a familiar ritual long enough to call it a track record.

Track records are valuable. Forty-seven months of uninterrupted disclosure is not nothing. But a track record of a low-quality disclosure is a claim about persistence, not a claim about rigor. It means the exchange has repeated the same incomplete exercise every month since shortly after FTX. It does not mean that users have ever seen an audited balance sheet.

What the Ratios Can and Cannot Tell Us About Real Withdrawal Capacity

The phrase 100% reserve ratio is dangerous because of the clean picture it creates in the mind of a retail user. A user reads that the exchange has 104% of BTC reserves and concludes that, if every BTC user asked for their coins back, the exchange could return all coins and still have 4% left. That conclusion rests on three assumptions.

The first assumption is that the BTC addresses controlled by the exchange are not encumbered by lending contracts, collateral claims, or custody agreements. An address can hold tokens even while those tokens are legally pledged to another creditor. Proof of ownership is not proof of unencumbered control.

The second assumption is that the liability database used to build the Merkle Tree contains every claim against the exchange. In any real exchange, users have balances in spot wallets, earn products, margin accounts, futures wallets, and other internal ledgers. If Huobi HTX excludes even one of those categories from the tree, its reported ratios overstate the actual degree of coverage.

An old and uncomfortable truth applies here: the moment a proof-of-reserves report is needed most is the moment when the market is uncertain whether exchange leadership is still honest and whether the exchange's assets are still present. Those are exactly the conditions under which a periodic snapshot is least likely to reflect reality.

I do not claim that Huobi HTX has manipulated its snapshot. No evidence in this announcement supports that allegation. My argument is structural. A system that does not prevent manipulation will eventually produce an environment where manipulation is suspected. And in this market, suspicion alone can trigger a liquidity crisis.

Token Economics: The Missing Piece

From a token economics perspective, the proof-of-reserves announcement contains no update to the HTX token supply schedule, no burn mechanism, no buyback program, and no yield-bearing integration. For long-term token holders, the actionable variables remain revenue growth, user acquisition, fee competitiveness, and regulatory licenses. Reserve ratios above 100% are necessary to avoid a catastrophic loss of confidence. They are not sufficient to create a bull case.

Market Positioning and the Myth of Differentiation

In the aftermath of FTX, proof-of-reserves had the power to soothe panic. In the current bull market, it has become table stakes. Every serious exchange publishes something. The publications look similar. They use Merkle Trees or, occasionally, more advanced cryptographic commitments. The marketing language is almost interchangeable.

Huobi HTX's report therefore does not create a competitive advantage. It prevents a competitive disadvantage. It is a defensive act. The exchange has checked the box that keeps it in the same conversation as Binance, OKX, and other large platforms.

The relative positioning of Huobi HTX is second-tier global exchange. Its differentiation is not based primarily on institutional-grade trust, because it does not have the kind of regulatory audit infrastructure that Coinbase uses. It is based on historical brand memory in the Chinese-speaking crypto community and on tight integration with TRON-related products. That integration is a double-edged sword. It provides a loyal ecosystem and a reliable source of token listings. It also makes Huobi HTX less attractive to conservative institutional allocators who view Justin Sun control risk as a serious diligence issue.

When an exchange names reserve assets that include TRX and USDs, the signal is not simply that those assets are in the treasury. A decentralized lender that counts its own governance token as collateral can survive only until the token price begins to fall. An exchange that counts its own ecosystem token as part of the reserves backing customer assets is running a similar experiment in self-referential valuation. It might work for years. It can fail in an afternoon.

The market has not yet priced this risk aggressively. Huobi HTX token has been trading in a bull market environment that lifts most crypto assets. The absence of measured price reaction to this proof-of-reserves report suggests that the market treats it as routine. That is an important signal. It means the announcement is unlikely to produce material incremental demand for HTX token. It is not a catalyst. It is a placeholder.

Regulatory and Legal Realities

The regulatory dimension of proof-of-reserves is often overlooked. A Merkle Tree report is not a compliance document. It has no legal standing under most securities regimes. It does not prove that the exchange is licensed. It does not prove that the exchange has implemented anti-money laundering controls. It does not prove that the exchange is allowed to serve users in any particular jurisdiction.

The most difficult fact for the crypto industry to accept is that financial regulation addresses solvency with accounting rules, capital requirements, independent audits, and examiner access. An exchange cannot substitute a website page for those requirements. The absence of such regulatory engagement is not necessarily illegal, but it is a risk signal for users.

Huobi HTX has a complicated regulatory history because of its former association with the Chinese market and its current links to Justin Sun, who was named in a civil enforcement action by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The exchange does not appear to have publicly presented a complete regulatory license portfolio covering the major Western jurisdictions. Its focus is, in practice, largely on markets where the regulatory framework is still evolving.

A proof-of-reserves report has no bearing on the legal questions raised by securities classification, market manipulation, or sanctions compliance. In principle, yes. The exchange can publicly sign a message from each disclosure address or simply publish the address. A user can then query the blockchain for the balance. The industry has long understood that a snapshot can be dressed up with so called window-dressing transactions. An exchange can borrow 10,000 BTC from a lending desk the day before the snapshot, deposit the BTC into a published address, report a 110% reserve ratio, then return the borrowed BTC after the snapshot is cryptographically committed. The on-chain record would be perfectly smooth and honest at the level of individual transactions. The only issue is that the assets were never unencumbered.

A more advanced disclosure system would use continuous or randomized auditing. Assets would be committed to a public address that has a demonstrated history of stable holdings. The exchange would prove that no large inbound transaction occurred in the week before the snapshot. The exchange would also commit to future snapshots at randomly selected times. None of those are present in the standard monthly snapshot.

Huobi HTX has been doing monthly snapshots for forty-seven months. If one of those snapshots happened to be manipulated, the market would probably not know. The monthly frequency gives the exchange time to prepare. The snapshot date is likely predictable. The user has no way to know whether the asset balances in the report are permanent holdings or temporary theater.

Correlation is a whisper; causation is a scream. The correlation between reported reserve ratios and exchange health is weak. The causation that would matter a causal link from the existence of assets in a wallet to the right of a user to withdraw them has not been established by this announcement.

Early Warning Indicators: What I Watch in an Exchange Like Huobi HTX

The fifth indicator is the entity structure. A centralized exchange with opaque ownership has a higher risk of creating internal arrangements that hide losses. Huobi HTX's relationship with Justin Sun is a known fact. His legal troubles may not affect the exchange's daily operations, but they can affect the willingness of Western regulators and banks to facilitate transactions in HTX-related assets.

The Contrarian Angle: Why Reserve Surpluses Might Not Mean What You Think

The conventional interpretation of a reserve ratio above 100% is that the exchange is conservatively capitalized. I want to challenge that interpretation.

A reserve ratio above 100% may indicate that the exchange is not lending aggressively. That could be conservative. It could also indicate that the exchange has not found enough organic lending demand for its assets and therefore keeps a larger share idle. In a bull market, an exchange that generates high fee income often uses customer assets for lending and earns a yield. A reserve ratio just above 100% might signal that the exchange prefers safety. It might also signal that the exchange cannot safely deploy its assets because its internal controls are weak or because its counterparties are too concentrated.

A second contrarian observation concerns the relationship between proof-of-reserves and price stability. The report does not prevent a depeg of USDs. It does not prevent a liquidation cascade in TRX. It does not prevent a sudden loss of confidence in Huobi HTX. The reserve ratio is a risk state variable, not a stabilizing force.

A third observation is that proof-of-reserves may be actively harmful to user decision making. When an exchange publishes a high reserve ratio, users lower their guard. They forget that the exchange still holds their assets in a centralized custody model. They forget that a proof-of-reserves report is not a guarantee of future performance. They begin to treat the exchange as if it were a bank with deposit insurance. That mental model can lead to larger deposits than would otherwise be rational.

The strongest contrarian point is that Huobi HTX may actually be solvent today while still being structurally incapable of proving it in a way that matters. An exchange should prove its aggregate liabilities with zero-knowledge protocols. It should also submit to regular audits by a licensed accounting firm. It should publish those audits in plain language that users can actually understand.

The exchange should also create a clear priority waterfall in the event of insolvency. Users need to know whether their assets are segregated from the exchange's own assets and whether they will have a preferential claim in a legal proceeding. Merkle Trees cannot answer that question. Legal documents can.

Until that framework appears, users should evaluate any exchange proof with a high degree of skepticism. Choose an exchange with a regulatory license wherever possible. Do not store your entire net worth on any centralized platform. Keep at least some assets in a non-custodial wallet. And treat each monthly proof-of-reserves report as what it is: a piece of public relations signed by cryptography.

The ledger doesn't lie, but the narrative does. Huobi HTX is probably not lying in its latest snapshot. The more relevant probability is that the snapshot narrative, standing alone, does not carry enough information for any prudent user to conclude that the exchange is safe.

Final Takeaway: The Next Month's Signal

The next authentic signal from Huobi HTX will not appear in the next reserve ratio update. It will appear in the design of that update. If the exchange adds an independent audit firm, publishes a full liability methodology, or adopts an open-source verification stack that anyone can run against a local node, that is a positive development.

If the next update looks exactly like the previous forty-seven months, then the concept of a track record has been used to normalize a weak form of disclosure. Consistency in a flawed process is not the same as safety.

Users who hold assets on Huobi HTX should ask a simple question each month: can I prove to a skeptical outsider, with technical and legal documents, that my assets will be repaid on demand? If the answer requires more trust than proof, reduce the size of the position.

A reserve ratio above 100% is better than a reserve ratio below 100%. That is the only conclusion the report justifies. It is not evidence of ethical management. It is not evidence of sound risk controls. It is not evidence that the exchange will survive the next crisis. It is a single data point in a system where opacity remains the original sin of valuation.

Opacity is the original sin of valuation. And this month, Huobi HTX has chosen to reveal one number while leaving the structure under that number tantalizingly dark. Individually, 104% and 102% inspire quiet confidence. Together, they are still two data points in a Merkle forest where the proof of roots is available, but the proof of solvency is not.
