The Bitcoin Bear Market Finale? On-Chain Data Says 'Not Yet, But Close'

Metaverse | CryptoCobie |

I’ve seen this play before. The short-term holder cost basis has crashed from $112,500 to $69,000. That’s a 38% drop in the average entry price of the market’s most reactive cohort. And now, for three consecutive days, that metric has dipped below the long-term holder cost basis. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost calls it a signal that the bear market is entering its final phase. But patterns like this have a history of breaking hearts.

Let’s get the definitions straight. Short-term holders (STH) are wallets that have held BTC for less than 155 days. Their cost basis is the weighted average price at which they acquired their coins. Long-term holders (LTH) are the opposite—the diamond hands. When STH cost basis falls below LTH cost basis, it implies that recent buyers are underwater relative to the accumulated base. Historically, this crossover has occurred near major bottoms: 2015, 2018, and briefly in 2020. But in 2019, the signal flashed and then reversed—a fake-out that trapped many early accumulators.

The Bitcoin Bear Market Finale? On-Chain Data Says 'Not Yet, But Close'

Darkfost is careful. He explicitly says this does not mean the bear market is over or that a bottom is confirmed. He recommends dollar-cost averaging. That’s the kind of cautious, data-driven nuance I respect. But the market will misinterpret this. Retail will see “final phase” and start loading up with leverage. I’ve seen this misread happen in 2022 when Terra’s collapse was called a “capitulation event.” Capitulation wasn’t the end; it was the beginning of an 18-month grind.

I’ve learned to treat on-chain signals as probabilities, not certainties. In 2017, during the Status SNT presale, I manually tracked wallet distributions and saw a 40% concentration risk. That empirical verification saved me from the later crash. For Bitcoin, I cross-reference the STH/LTH crossover with other metrics like MVRV Z-Score and the Puell Multiple. Currently, MVRV Z-Score is at 0.8—below the 1.0 threshold that marked previous bear market floors. Puell Multiple is 0.3, historically associated with miner distress but not necessarily a bottom. Together, the picture is consistent with a late-stage bear market, but not a definitive all-clear.

Here’s the part most analysis misses: the STH cost basis drop to $69k isn’t just a number. It reflects real pain. Every BTC bought above $69k is now a losing trade. The volume-weighted average price of recent buyers has compressed significantly. That creates a potential “seller exhaustion” zone—but only if demand starts absorbing the supply. If the price continues to drift lower, the STH cost basis will fall further, and the crossover could widen again, signaling deeper capitulation. That’s exactly what happened in late 2018: the crossover lasted for months before the real bottom in December.

Impermanence is the only permanent yield. In DeFi, I calculate the risk tax on every yield strategy. For Bitcoin, the risk tax right now is the opportunity cost of not being fully in cash. DCA reduces that tax but doesn’t eliminate it. The question every trader must answer is: are you willing to sit through another 30% drawdown for a 200% upside two years later? Most aren’t.

Volatility is the tax on imagination. The imagination here is that liquidity will return when macro conditions improve. But the Fed hasn’t pivoted yet. Money market funds are still offering 5% risk-free. Why would institutions rotate into a volatile asset that has lost 45% from its peak? They won’t until the risk/reward flips decisively. The STH/LTH crossover is a necessary condition for a bottom, but not sufficient. We need sustained accumulation by LTHs—at least 10,000 BTC per week flowing into age-worn wallets. We also need a stabilization of the stablecoin supply ratio (USDT dominance) below 5%. Right now, USDT dominance is at 6.2%, still elevated.

Arbitrage is just patience wearing a math mask. The arbitrage here is between the narrative of “final phase” and the reality of a market that could still correct. The smart money will wait for confirmation: a weekly close above the 200-week moving average ($58k currently) with increasing volume. Until then, the only rational strategy is to accumulate slowly, like a vulture circling a carcass that still has some meat.

My takeaway is actionable: set a fixed DCA amount—no more than 20% of your liquid net worth—and allocate it over the next 6 months. Use limit orders at 10% below the current price to catch panic wicks. Monitor the LTH net position change on CryptoQuant. If LTHs start distributing (selling), pause all buys. If they accumulate, stay the course. The bottom will not be a single event; it will be a zone. And in a zone, the only way to survive is to preserve capital and wait for the liquidity to return.

That’s the cold truth. Not a rally call, just a probability.
